Sydney Chukuma Ukonu was the fourth surviving child of an Anglican Church Agent. He attended King?s College, Lagos, and was one of the pioneer Economics graduates of University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1963. In the immediate academic year following his graduation, he was a Research Fellow at the Economic Development Institute of the university, under Ford Foundation sponsorship. In 1971, he attended a Middle Management Course at the Nigerian Institute of Management, Lagos; in 1977, another course in Marketing at Batalim, Toronto, Canada, and in 1981, he attended the Senior Management course at the Oxford Centre for Management Studies, Kennington, Oxford. He was one of the pioneer graduates of the Institute for Theology and Mission in Africa (ITAMA), earning the Advanced Diploma in Counselling and Pastoral Studies (ADCAPS). Sydney Ukonu died on the 15th of August 2025, after a brief illness at the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, leaving behind five children who live in Winnipeg and Regina, and one daughter in Maryland. Before his death, Sydney Ukonu lived in Maryland, United States of America.
